Bronx advocates score win in debate over Cross-Bronx highway rehab plans
"The feedback we received from the community made it clear that the use of a traffic diversion structure was a nonstarter, so we have eliminated those options from consideration,"
"Now that we are full partners at the table, we look forward to working with Gov. [Kathy] Hochul and [the state transportation department] toward a more just, sustainable vision of the corridor."
New York state transportation officials have withdrawn plans to build an elevated diversion road alongside a mile-long stretch of the Cross-Bronx Expressway following community opposition. The Cross Bronx Bridges Project will still proceed to repair or replace five aging bridges along the heavily trafficked highway. The initially proposed temporary diversion would have risen over the Bronx River and Starlight Park. Critics warned it would increase congestion, reduce tree canopy, and worsen pollution-related health issues such as high asthma rates. Officials say the project is needed for safety, and without the diversion the work will take about two additional years, finishing in 2032.
