Barclays Center debuts public art honoring 2024 Liberty champions * Brooklyn Paper
Briefly

The Liberty Portraits installation, created by LaToya Ruby Frazier, features nine-foot-tall double-sided portraits of players from the 2024 WNBA champion New York Liberty. Displayed at Barclays Center, each portrait shows a player in uniform on one side and with their chosen family on the other. Frazier created portraits in meaningful locations for players, including the Bahamas. Each portrait includes a first-person testimony from a family member. The installation celebrates female leadership, influence, diversity, and the players' off-court lives, drawing inspiration from the Statue of Liberty.
"This collaboration extends beyond fandom and the spectacle of sport; it's an act of celebrating and bearing witness to the full humanity of these championship players - their struggles, their triumphs, their lives outside the arena."
"I was inspired by the Statue of Liberty's eternal promise: freedom, hope, and the vision of a brighter future to enlighten the world. I'm interested in creating a bridge between the fans and the team, deepening a sense of compassion and commanding the dignity and respect the team deserves."
