The Los Angeles-based sculptor Kelly Akashi is developing an 18ft-tall sculpture depicting flowers native to the New York region rising from a bronze hand."
New Terminal One at John F. Kennedy International Airport will house seven large-scale commissions by contemporary artists and is scheduled for completion in 2030. The project is being developed by New Terminal One and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The terminal will span 2.6 million square feet, cost an estimated $9.5 billion, open in phases beginning next year, and include 23 gates devoted to international flights with capacity for about 23 million passengers annually. Culture Corps curated the artistic programme. Yinka Shonibare will create nine hand-painted kites using Dutch wax batik, and Kelly Akashi will install an 18ft-tall floral sculpture; commissions by Tomás Saraceno, Ilana Savdie, Julie Curtiss, Firelei Báez and Woody De Othello are also planned. Each artwork will function as a welcome and send-off to international travelers.
