5 hurt in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, including 3 firefighters
"It's very labor-intensive. The fire gets into the voids of these very old structures, so we have open up the walls, the ceilings, the floors manually,"
"We were in bed. Our neighbor came ringing our door frantically, he woke us up. We smelled smoke, popped my head outside, flames shooting out of his building,"
"Everything's gone."
A fire broke out just before 2 a.m. at a wood-frame home on Humboldt Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with all three floors burning on arrival. Firefighters reached the scene in under three and a half minutes and battled flames that spread to a neighboring building. The fire penetrated voids in the old structure, requiring manual opening of walls, ceilings, and floors to extinguish hidden pockets of fire. Five people were hurt, including three firefighters. Both 494 and 496 Humboldt Street received full vacate orders, the Red Cross is assisting six adults, and the cause remains under investigation.
