The Patriots have prioritized keeping cornerback Christian Gonzalez long term, but progress on a contract extension has been slow. His fifth-year option took longer than expected to be picked up, and negotiations for an extension have not yet begun. Gonzalez is widely viewed as one of the league’s best cornerbacks only three years into his career, and he is expected to be rewarded with a large contract. Current projections estimate a four-year, $125 million extension that would make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. The Chiefs recently reset the market by extending Trent McDuffie after acquiring him, and Gonzalez’s projected deal could similarly reshape expectations for the position in New England.
"The Chiefs made a big splash when they boosted their secondary by acquiring McDuffie earlier this offseason and immediately extended him on a four-year, $124 million deal. Considering Gonzalez is a better player, he will surely be the first Patriot to change the NFL's future in a long time."
