Two Sharks defensemen questionable to play vs. Utah; Warsofsky's message to Smith
"SAN JOSE Defensemen John Klingberg and Timothy Liljegren are both day-to-day with injuries and appear to be questionable to play Friday when the winless San Jose Sharks face the Utah Mammoth in their first road game of the season. Klingberg is dealing with a lower-body injury, and Liljegren, another right-shot defenseman, has an upper-body ailment, said Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky, who added that Klingberg's injury does not involve his resurfaced hips. Klingberg had double hip resurfacing surgery in December 2023 and returned to the NHL in January with the Edmonton Oilers."
"Both Klingberg and Liljegren were injured during the Sharks' 5-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes at SAP Center on Tuesday, Warsofsky said. Klingberg did not play the final 5:12 of regulation time, and Liljegren did not take a shift in the final 6:13, as the Sharks (0-1-2) lost their third straight game to begin the season. Klingberg is on the Sharks' first power play unit and has a goal and an assist in three games. Liljegren earned kudos for his play during the preseason and the Sharks' first two games, as his 20:14 in average time on ice is second behind Dmitry Orlov (22:19) among all Sharks defensemen."
John Klingberg and Timothy Liljegren are both listed day-to-day with lower- and upper-body injuries, respectively, and are questionable for Friday's road game in Salt Lake City. Klingberg's ailment does not relate to his December 2023 double hip resurfacing; he returned to the NHL in January with the Edmonton Oilers. Both were hurt during the Sharks' 5-1 loss to Carolina, missing the closing minutes. Klingberg anchors the first power-play unit and has a goal and an assist in three games. Liljegren averages 20:14 time on ice, second among Sharks defensemen. Potential replacements include Shakir Mukhamadullin or Vincent Desharnais.
