Tom Wilson appears to lose spot on Team Canada's top line with Connor McDavid and Macklin Celebrini
""Take away the fact that they're all phenomenal players, number-one picks, many times it doesn't work. There has to be chemistry between the group, and those are three guys that need the puck, and there's only one puck out there. I have to admit, there was a lot of unselfishness between those guys, and that's what you want to see.""
""Your job as a coach is to put the team in the best situation to succeed," Cooper explained to TSN postgame. "Take away the fact that they're all phenomenal players, number-one picks, many times it doesn't work. There has to be chemistry between the group, and those are three guys that need the puck, and there's only one puck out there.""
Wilson was a surprise inclusion on Team Canada's top line, starting beside Connor McDavid and 19-year-old Macklin Celebrini. Wilson played the entirety of the first game on that line before head coach Jon Cooper moved Nathan MacKinnon into Wilson's spot during the second period of Canada's 5-1 win over Switzerland. After the change, Celebrini and MacKinnon scored. Cooper cited chemistry and unselfishness as key factors and emphasized play without the puck. McDavid described familiarity with MacKinnon's tendencies and praised their compatibility. MacKinnon called the experience "cool" and expressed his love for the game.
