Mike Sullivan coached the Pittsburgh Penguins for 10 seasons, compiling 409 wins and winning Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. The New York Rangers opened the 2025-26 season with a 3-0 loss at Madison Square Garden to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Arturs Silovs stopped 22 shots for a shutout while Justin Brazeau scored two goals. The Rangers were outshot 15-5 in the third period and produced inconsistent offense. Sullivan left Pittsburgh in April despite a contract through 2026-27 and was hired by the Rangers. Sullivan is slated to coach Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and the result was called disappointing while the team prepares to move forward.
