The Stanley Cup visited Walt Disney World's EPCOT, where Florida Panthers forward Evan Rodrigues was photographed with the trophy and guests were told a commercial was being filmed. The Cup appeared on Disney's Skyliner and near the France Pavilion, reportedly surrounded by stuffed Remy characters tied to Pixar's Ratatouille and the Remy's Ratatouille Adventure ride. The piece notes Disney once involved other sports, referencing a 1993 Patrick Roy Disneyland commercial, and mentions the Panthers' rat-related superstition originating from Scott Mellanby's 1996 locker-room incident, with fans throwing plastic rats after victories.
Well, the Stanley Cup was the one going to Disney World this past weekend. More specifically, the Cup was headed to the EPCOT theme park of the Walt Disney World resort. Evan Rodrigues of the Florida Panthers was seen with the Cup and park guests were told that a commercial was being filmed. A post on X from the Panthers showed the C up on Disney's Skyliner, a transportation system that goes between parks and hotels at the resort, as well.
Better luck next year, Canada, maybe. You probably figured where this is going. The Panthers famously have a connection with rats following Scott Mellanby's infamous locker room encounter during the 1996 playoffs that lead to the team's first Stanley Cup final appearance. A rat has become one of their mascots. Fans throw plastic rats on the ice to celebrate victory.
