Some More Possible Names For Trenton's New ECHL Team
"File this under "it's an option, but not a good one". No offense to the New Jersey Devils, but Trenton is more evenly divided between New York/New Jersey sports fans and Philadelphia sports fans. The rebranding from the popular Titans to the Trenton Devils is a commonly cited reason Trenton's former ECHL team began going downhill to their eventual demise. Also if the team lacks any affiliation with the Devils, the team name wouldn't make any sense."
"Not everyone in Trenton is a Philadelphia sports fan, but anecdotal evidence (for example, the Trenton Thunder baseball team have appearances with the Philly Fanatic every season) points to it being tilted in their favor. We're just saying if the new team name is going to be shared with an NHL team then the Flyers would be the better choice."
An ECHL franchise relocated from Utah will begin play in Trenton next season and will select its new name via a fan contest. Proposed names include Trenton Devils, Trenton Flyers, and Trenton Takers among others. The Devils name risks alienating fans due to the city's split loyalties and lack of current affiliation with the New Jersey Devils; that rebrand previously coincided with the former team's decline. The Flyers name appeals to local Philadelphia-leaning fans and recalls the Titans' successful Flyers affiliation. The Takers name references the city's 'Trenton Makes The World Takes' manufacturing heritage.
