Slow starts continue to cost Rangers as rock-bottom gets lower amNewYork
"You can't start a game like that, said Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan. Spot a team a couple goals, and then take seven penalties along the way and think you're gonna give yourself the best chance to win. It's just not a recipe for success."
"Obviously weren't quite ready to play, said captain J.T. Miller. You feel like you are, but they come out flying, and they draw two penalties. They capitalized, building was rocking. We just kind of beat ourselves."
The Rangers surrendered three goals in the opening 7:37 after committing two penalties in the first 1:23, allowing the Sharks to seize control. Macklin Celebrini opened scoring 1:09 in on a power play created by a Mika Zibanejad tripping penalty, with Tyler Toffoli feeding a centering pass from down low. New York did not allow a goal past the eight-minute mark of the opening frame and limited San Jose to 14 shots over the final 40 minutes, but the early deficit and seven penalties ruined any comeback chances and completed a California sweep.
