Scenes from Leafs' morning skate: Matthews, Knies, Roy's status to be determined vs. Blue Jackets
"Knies, Matthews and Roy all practised today. Looked good, finished practice but still have to see about tomorrow so that's where they're at. But it was good that they were out there & finished practice and went through all the drills."
"That's the way you got to look at things. The glass is half full. We got an opportunity to go in here tomorrow and get two points and that's got to be our focus and then we'll go from there to the next game."
"That happens quite a bit, honestly. Puck ramps up your stick. This one, my face just blew up right away. They just wanted to make sure there's no fracture, which there's not. Got lucky, I guess, on that"
The Toronto Maple Leafs practised at the Ford Performance Centre before a five-game road trip, with Auston Matthews, Matthew Knies and Nicolas Roy skating in grey extra uniforms. Head coach Craig Berube confirmed their statuses remain to be determined for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jackets but said they finished practice and went through all drills. Matthews led the stretch while Berube urged a positive, 'glass half full' outlook and stressed focusing on earning two points. Line combinations placed Easton Cowan with John Tavares and William Nylander, Max Domi centering Nick Robertson and Calle Jarnkrok, and Jacob Quillan skating with Dakota Joshua and Matias Maccelli. Sammy Blais alternated on the left wing, Steven Lorentz, Scott Laughton and Bobby McMann formed the fourth line, and Jake McCabe will return after facial scans showed no fracture; Berube identified McCabe and Simon Benoit as the shutdown pairing.
