Ryan Leonard scores game-winning shootout goal for Team USA against Germany, named Player of the Game
Ryan Leonard helped Team USA earn a second victory at the 2026 World Championship in Switzerland. He scored the game-winning goal in a five-round shootout against Germany after the teams were tied 1-1 through four rounds. Devin Cooley stopped Nicolas Kramer, and Leonard beat Phillipp Grubauer with a forehand move and a snap shot that went past Grubauer’s glove. Leonard fired five shots on goal and played 18:22 of ice time while skating on the top line with Matthew Tkachuk and Tommy Novak. He also contributed to the game-tying goal in the third period by shooting on net, which deflected out of Grubauer’s pads onto Novak’s stick. Leonard was named Player of the Game and received a Tissot watch. Team USA has three Group A games remaining, starting against Latvia, and sits fourth behind Switzerland, Finland, and Austria.
"After the action, Leonard was chosen as Team USA's Player of the Game. For his efforts, he was awarded the Tissot watch. Team USA has three more games left in Group A action, starting Saturday against Latvia. They currently sit fourth in the group's standings, trailing Switzerland, Finland, and Austria."
