Russian Olympic Committee plans legal challenge after IOC confirms teams are barred from 2026 Winter Olympics
Briefly

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that Russian teams, including the men's and women's hockey teams, will remain banned from the 2026 Winter Olympics as part of sanctions imposed following Russia's military aggression against Ukraine in 2022. This ban remains in effect as the IOC confirms its position that teams of athletes with Russian passports cannot be considered unified teams. Despite a few individual athletes possibly competing, the Russian Olympic Committee is exploring legal challenges to the IOC's ruling.
"The IOC Executive Board recommendation from March 2023 with regard to teams of athletes with a Russian passport remains in place," the IOC told Reuters' Karolos Grohmann.
The IIHF had already announced an extension of Russia and Belarus' ban through the 2025-26 season... A small number of individual athletes may still be able to compete in the 2026 games."
