Rejuvenated Reilly, stellar Stolarz lead Maple Leafs to season-opening win
"Morgan Rielly wasted little time getting back in the good graces of the Toronto Maple Leafs and their fans. The Maple Leafs' longest-serving player, who has been the subject of offseason trade speculation, struggled last season under coach Craig Berube's first year in Toronto. The smooth-skating defenseman was by far the Leafs' best player during the team's opening-night 5-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens."
"Anthony Stolarz, fresh off signing a four-year extension, kept the Leafs in the game until they found their footing. He looked steady and in control throughout the evening, making 29 saves on 31 shots. Rielly's outstanding play leads to Leafs win The Maple Leafs started fast by scoring exactly one minute into the contest, something they didn't do at all during the 2024-25 regular season."
Morgan Rielly produced the Maple Leafs' best performance in the opening-night 5-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens. The longest-serving Leaf had offseason trade speculation and struggled last season under coach Craig Berube's first year in Toronto. Anthony Stolarz, fresh off a four-year extension, made 29 saves on 31 shots and appeared steady and controlled. Bobby McMann scored one minute into the contest on a William Nylander wrist shot after John Tavares won an offensive zone faceoff. Nylander's neutral-zone turnover led to a shorthanded goal by Oliver Kapanen. An Oliver Ekman-Larsson turnover produced a Zac Bolduc goal early in the second, and Calle Jarnkrok later tied the game as Rielly actively joined the rush and defended from the left point.
