He was also a candidate for the Penguins' general manager job in 2014 before it ultimately went to Jim Rutherford. After nearly two decades split between TSN and NBC Sports on TV, McGuire was hired in July 2021 as the Ottawa Senators' senior vice-president of player development."

McGuire spent nearly two decades with TSN and NBC Sports and has recently made appearances on CBS Sports HQ. McGuire previously served as a scout and assistant coach for the Penguins from 1990–1992, winning Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992, and he was a candidate for the Penguins' general manager role in 2014. McGuire held NHL and ECHL coaching positions and served briefly as Ottawa Senators senior vice-president of player development.
