""He's such a important person in that locker room," Panthers coach Paul Maurice said Friday. "I think what we're going to get to experience now is you'll get to know some of the other leaders that we have in our room." Barkov was hurt 20 minutes into practice, doing a simple drill on a play where he took minimal contact."
Aleksander Barkov underwent surgery to repair torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee after sustaining the injury in his first official training-camp practice. The Panthers indicated a typical recovery timeframe of 7-9 months, a span likely to sideline Barkov for the regular season and potentially the playoffs and to prevent Olympic participation for Finland. Coach Paul Maurice stressed Barkov's importance to the locker room while saying other leaders will emerge. Barkov led Florida with 51 assists last season, added significant playoff production, and had appeared in over 86% of Florida games across 12 NHL seasons. The Panthers also remain without Matthew Tkachuk as he recovers from offseason surgery.
