""We want to try different things all year," Roy said. "We talk about it and we'll continue to do it.""
""It was a tough decision, I won't lie," Roy said. "Anthony Duclair had a great game against Columbus. There are going to be decisions like this, and we do what we think is right for the team.""

Patrick Roy used the final 2025 game to reshuffle all four Islanders lines and test different player combinations. Mathew Barzal moved to the wing to join Bo Horvat and Emil Heineman on the top line, creating offensive reunification while making room for Cal Ritchie to return at center between Max Shabanov and Simon Holmstrom. Jean-Gabriel Pageau shifted to center a line with Anders Lee and Jonathan Drouin. Anthony Duclair joined Casey Cizikas and Marc Gatcomb on the fourth line, leaving Kyle MacLean as a healthy scratch. David Rittich was slated for a fifth straight start as the team managed Ilya Sorokin's nagging injury; Rittich entered with nine wins, two shutouts and a .919 save percentage. The changes continued a season-long approach of experimenting to find the right balance.
