Auston Matthews has been named captain of the United States men's Olympic hockey team. Charlie McAvoy and Matthew Tkachuk will serve as alternate captains. Matthews previously served as the United States' captain during the 4 Nations Face-Off. United States general manager Bill Guerin praised their varied leadership traits and said the trio are excited to represent Team USA. Matthews has 26 goals and 48 points in 51 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season and has rounded back into top form through January. During practice Matthews was paired with Jake Guentzel and Matt Boldy; Jack Eichel centred a line with Brady Tkachuk and Matthew Tkachuk. Matthews described representing his country as a huge honour and said the team should be competing for Olympic gold.
