A first-period brawl between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes began after Nic Dowd crashed into goaltender Frederik Andersen behind the Carolina net. Logan Stankoven skated from the other side of the net, grabbed Martin Fehervary while Fehervary wrestled Jackson Blake to the ice, and both players exchanged punches and drew blood before being sent to the penalty boxes. Stankoven reacted positively to the fight and emphasized defending teammates. Fehervary held a roughly six-inch, 50-pound advantage and had limited prior fighting experience. Rod Brind'Amour noted Stankoven's physical presence during the scrum.
