Leafs' third line is showing what was promised before the season
"Throughout the first couple of months of the season, the Maple Leafs have been missing something. They have games where they look like one of the best teams in the East, but others where they look like a team that will be picking high in the draft. Part of the reason for this inconsistency has been the lack of production from their third line. All-season head coach Craig Berube has struggled to find a consistent line combination that works."
"However, over the past few games, Berube may have found a combination that works. In last Saturday's win over the Penguins, the line of Dakota Joshua, Nicolas Roy, and Bobby McMann dominated. All three of them found the back of the net and combined for five points. Then, in their next matchup against the Panthers, the three combined for four points. It seems like the Leafs have finally found a combination that works and could help them right the ship."
The Maple Leafs have shown inconsistent performance early in the season, oscillating between elite displays and draft-contender form largely due to weak third-line production. Coach Craig Berube struggled to find a reliable third-line combination until recent games. The Dakota Joshua–Nicolas Roy–Bobby McMann trio scored multiple goals and combined for nine points across wins over the Penguins and Panthers. Moneypuck metrics show a 45.5% xG, 2.65 xGF/60, 40.5% Corsi, and 56.47 shot attempts/60 in limited action together. The trio also adds physicality—Joshua and McMann rank among team leaders in hits and Roy is resilient—offering a stronger, grittier depth option.
