"When I met with him before the season, I said I want him to feel my trust,"
"I thought today was the moment."
"It's OK. It's good. But I should help the team. Not like this."
"We're using the word 'compassion,' and that's an example. You want to be there for your players, and Ilya deserved that. Ilya is one of the best goalies in the league and he needs to have fun being on the ice and he needs to feel good about himself."
Extras remained on the ice after the Islanders' morning skate, including Ilya Sorokin and Patrick Roy. Patrick Roy stayed to work one-on-one with Sorokin to reinforce trust and address rebound control. David Rittich made his first start as the Islanders tried to avoid losing their opening four games in regulation. Sorokin, in the second season of an eight-year, $66 million deal, struggled with rebound control and posted a 4.18 goals-against average and .854 save percentage through three games. Sorokin made 21 saves in a 5-2 loss, acknowledged he should help the team more, and Roy later addressed rebound handling on the ice while emphasizing compassion and confidence-building.
