Islanders' former 1st-rounder gets shot on PTO
"He made the jump to the AHL in 2019-20, playing 45 games in Bridgeport. He managed 10 goals and 22 points in 45 games. That performance earned him a nine-game trial during the 2019-20 season, but he went scoreless. The Isles brought him into the fold during the 2020-21 season, in which he had a promising showing, notching 12 goals in 44 games. He played a full season in 2021-22, adding 13 goals in 73 games."
"The team placed him on waivers in mid-December, ending his time in New York. The Bruins claimed Wahlstrom, placing him in the lineup for 16 more games. He managed just one goal. The Bruins did not issue a qualifying offer to Wahlstrom as he was slated to become an RFA. That situation made him a UFA this summer. Unfortunately, no one was willing to give Wahlstrom a full-time NHL contract."
Oliver Wahlstrom, the Islanders' 2018 first-round pick, posted 94 points with the US National Development program and 22 goals with the USNTDP Junior team. He scored eight goals in 36 games at Boston College before moving to the AHL in 2019-20, where he had 10 goals and 22 points and earned a nine-game NHL trial. He recorded 12 goals in 2020-21 and 13 goals in 2021-22 for the Islanders, but playing time and production declined afterward, leading to waivers, a brief Bruins stint, and UFA status. He signed a PTO with the San Jose Sharks and must compete for an NHL contract.
