Gavin McKenna notches pair of sick assists in NCAA debut for Penn State
"I heard the boos when I got to touch the puck, and yeah, it was fun,"
"I think playing in [front of] a crowd like that, it's easy to get up for a game like this."
"There's not a lot of time and space out there,"
"I think it's quicker... You're playing with some good players and playing against good players. I think I've played against good players in my life. Playing at world juniors and stuff, I think that kind of prepared me for this."
Gavin McKenna, a 17-year-old freshman and projected first overall NHL Draft pick, produced two primary assists in his collegiate debut as fifth-ranked Penn State overcame four one-goal deficits to beat No. 14 Arizona State 6-3. McKenna set up an early no-look pass to Aiden Fink and later fed Charlie Cerrato for another primary assist. The game aired nationally on NHL Network and drew audible boos whenever McKenna touched the puck. McKenna cited WHL and world juniors experience as preparation for the faster, tighter college game. Penn State and Arizona State will rematch the following night with McKenna still seeking his first NCAA goal.
