Craig Berube praises confident Maple Leafs for buying into team's structure
"Everybody contributing. Everybody did their job. The goaltender was really good. All around, it was pretty solid hockey by everybody. That is the one thing I take away from it: everyone was bought in."
"I think we are playing a lot better. The puck play has been better. There have been a lot of things that have been better. Tonight, special teams were the difference in the game, but the team has confidence. They're starting to understand how we need to do things. Everyone is buying into it. That is the biggest thing."
The Toronto Maple Leafs blanked the New Jersey Devils 4-0 behind strong goaltending, effective special teams, a heavy forecheck, and collective defensive-zone coverage. Craig Berube emphasized that everybody contributed, did their job, and that the team is bought in. The Leafs played severely shorthanded with Auston Matthews a late scratch, William Nylander recovering from a lower-body injury, and Dakota Joshua and Chris Tanev out. Special teams provided the edge, including an opening first-period power-play goal. Toronto moved to 18-15-6, sits three points out of a playoff spot, and has adjusted its power play under Steve Sullivan after coaching changes.
