Craig Berube on expectations for Matias Maccelli after a healthy scratch: "This guy is capable of doing more than he's doing"
"It's just a different look. He has run the power play in the past for different teams. We are just trying to get something that works here; we're trying to find some stability. We did it last year, too, trying to get it to work. Eventually, we did. We are going to keep banging away at it to get it to work."
"Well, he has done some good things, obviously. There are little things in his game that he can be better at, which I discussed with him yesterday. I'll keep it between us, but there are some things where we want more out of him. He is capable of giving more. I don't go to people or players and say, "I want you to do this, this, and this," if they're not capable of doing it."
"You just keep battling and working at it, show video, talk to the players, talk to the team, and work on it in practice. It is mental when you can do it half of the time, and then in the other half, you don't do it. It's just a mindset. We need to do it for 60 minutes. For sure, it can. It was a good comeback by our guys."
Oliver Ekman-Larsson has taken the top power-play quarterback role to provide a different look and draw on past power-play experience while the team seeks stability. The organization will continue adjusting personnel to find a successful power-play formula. Matias Maccelli has shown positive plays but has specific areas of his game that require improvement and is capable of contributing more. Coaching emphasis targets achieving consistency for full 60-minute games through battling, practice, video review, and player conversations. Late-game comebacks can reinforce the mindset and behaviors required to sustain performance.
