Connor McDavid calls Tom Wilson a 'forechecking god'
""Unreal, unreal," McDavid said to the NHL per Jason Demers. "Both of them were amazing. Willie's just a forechecking god. So hard on guys. Created so much space out there. It was fun. And Mack was really impressive. Just kept so many plays alive. He's dangerous. He's a great player.""
""Everybody needs an F1 right? That big boy there is one of the best I've seen," Cooper said of Wilson after the team's first practice. "[S]ome guys are forecheckers. Some guys aren't. Some guys are puck-possession guys. And when you find that right mix...""
""Just in case a fight breaks out, he's protected," Cooper joked."
Connor McDavid skated on a line with Macklin Celebrini and Tom Wilson in Canada's Olympic group-stage game. McDavid praised Wilson's intense forechecking and Celebrini's ability to keep plays alive and create danger. On their first shift McDavid delivered a heavy hit, and Celebrini deflected a Cale Makar shot for the goal with 15 seconds remaining in the period; McDavid earned the secondary assist on the eventual game-winner. McDavid finished with three assists in a 5-0 win over Czechia. Coach Jon Cooper paired McDavid with Wilson to provide playmaking space and complementary roles; Cooper also joked the pairing offers protection, though fighting is not allowed in Olympic play.
