Capitals vs. Islanders: How the Game Was Won
"After a couple of nail-biters against Detroit and the Hurricanes, and with just a handful of points separating themselves and their opponent, the Caps needed to find a way to just get a regulation win last night. It wasn't always the prettiest - which tends to be the way it goes when the Caps and Isles clash - but the Caps put together a workmanlike effort to protect their rookie netminder and snag an important victory."
"That all stemmed from a couple of goals scored about 30 seconds apart, the game-tying goal from Martin Fehervary and the go-ahead tally (and eventual game-winner) from Anthony Beauvillier. Fehervary's opening goal came off a nice exchange in the offensive zone, first from Nic Dowd along the boards and then on a quick give-and-go with Tom Wilson before firing the puck past David Rittich:"
After two close games and a tight standings race, the Capitals needed a regulation win and delivered a workmanlike performance to protect their rookie netminder and secure two points. The momentum swung on back-to-back goals about 30 seconds apart: Martin Fehervary tied the game after a give-and-go with Tom Wilson, and Anthony Beauvillier scored the go-ahead, eventual game-winner by wrapping the puck between the goalie's skate and the post. The Islanders managed 12 shots in the first period but only 17 thereafter, while Clay Stevenson made timely saves. A Nic Dowd deflection off Tony DeAngelo's boot gave #26 a two-point night.
