Capitals vs. Blue Jackets: How the Game Was Won
"The Washington Capitals really needed a bounceback game after Saturday night's rough outing against the Lightning. Fortunately for them, and unfortunately for the Columbus Blue Jackets, they got just that. Although the game got off to a bit of a slow start for both teams, the Capitals were in control pretty much from the beginning and ended up scoring five unanswered goals."
"and it took 36 seconds for Jakob Chychrun to make the Blue Jackets pay for it. Tom Wilson corralled the puck in the left corner and fed it up to Chychrun, who was hovering just below the blue line. Chychrun had plenty of time and space to skate along the edge of the zone before firing a wrist shot from the point. Columbus netminder Elvis Merzlikins had traffic in front, courtesy of his own teammates, and Chychrun beat him glove-side."
"The Caps' coaching staff made some pretty big changes to their power play after they went a dismal 0-for-6 against Tampa on Saturday, and those changes paid off immediately. While they were unable to convert on the man-advantage for the rest of the game (including a 5-on-3), hopefully finding the back of the net will help breathe some life back into both power play units."
The Washington Capitals delivered a decisive 5-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, scoring five consecutive goals after a slow start. Defensemen provided four of the goals, with Jakob Chychrun scoring twice and John Carlson and Martin Fehérváry also finding the net; Tom Wilson added the remaining goal. Chychrun's second goal came on the power play 19:09 into the second period, created by a feed from Wilson and finished with a glove-side wrist shot past Elvis Merzlikins. Coaching adjustments to the power play after a 0-for-6 outing against Tampa produced an immediate score, though subsequent opportunities, including a 5-on-3, were not converted.
