Capitals, banged up and stretched thin, set to meet Canadiens
"Justin Sourdif, who left Sunday's loss in Nashville in the second period after being struck in the face with a deflected puck, will not play Tuesday against the Montreal Canadiens. Washington Coach Spencer Carbery said Sourdif is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Winger Tom Wilson has been out with a lower-body injury for the last four games and will miss his fifth against Montreal. Wilson skated Tuesday morning with the team in a noncontact jersey; he has not yet been cleared for contact and would need to take contact, in a practice or a morning skate, before he's approved to return."
"With those losses and question marks added to the nearly season-long absence of center Pierre-Luc Dubois, the Capitals' lineup is growing increasingly thin. Along the way, they've alternated between wins and losses and have slipped below the playoff line in the Eastern Conference. "I think [this week is] crucial," Carbery said. "This stretch before the Olympic break, I think we've got maybe a dozen games left or 13 games left. Really important, and when you get home games inside of that chunk of games, going to have to take advantage. A real important stretch.""
"Washington beat Montreal, 8-4, in the teams' last meeting, which featured a hat trick from captain Alex Ovechkin and the birth of center Dylan Strome's third daughter. Winger Sonny Milano scored twice in that game but has just one goal and three assists in his last 16 appearances since then, while being a healthy scratch on several occasions. Milano will draw into the lineup Tuesday,"
Justin Sourdif will not play Tuesday after being struck in the face and is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. Tom Wilson remains sidelined with a lower-body issue and has not been cleared for contact despite skating in a noncontact jersey. Jakob Chychrun missed a recent game with an illness and is a game-time decision. Pierre-Luc Dubois remains out for nearly the entire season, leaving the lineup short on depth. The team has alternated wins and losses and fallen below the Eastern Conference playoff line. Sonny Milano returns to the lineup after limited production and occasional healthy scratches. Coach Spencer Carbery called the upcoming stretch before the Olympic break crucial, emphasizing the need to capitalize on remaining home games.
