Willie McGinest shares how his No. 55 became an iconic piece of USC, Patriots history
""He [Seau] only played one year of college football ... he played his junior year and went nuts," McGinest said. "He had like 24 sacks. Fifth pick in the draft off of one year. ... After his year, they made that a special number for the premiere linebacker coming in.""
""The air came out of me, I was like, 'yeah you kidding me bro? You gave birth to that number, that's your number'," McGinest recalled. "He said 'yeah I know bro. But you made it something here in New Englan"
Junior Seau played one college season at USC, recorded about 24 sacks, and became the fifth overall draft pick, prompting USC to designate No. 55 for premier incoming linebackers. Willie McGinest inherited No. 55 at USC and carried it through an 11-season New England career (1994–2005), becoming the Patriots' second all-time sack leader, appearing in four Super Bowls and winning three. After McGinest left in 2006, Bill Belichick signed Seau, and Seau requested McGinest's blessing to wear No. 55, acknowledging that McGinest had made the number significant in New England.
