Makena Cook, quarterback for Orange Lutheran High, excelled in leading her team to a flag football championship this season. With CIF-sanctioned girls' flag football rapidly gaining popularity, rule changes are on the horizon. The introduction of a standardized rulebook by the National Federation of State High School Associations is expected to dramatically shift play styles. Coaches, including Orange Lutheran's Kristen Sherman, are concerned that changes such as moving the defensive rush line closer will force teams to adapt their strategies, possibly making gameplay more focused on short passes and runs.
"It's one of the fastest-growing sports now across the country, and when we get sports that are played by multiple states, it works out better if everybody's playing from the same set of rules."
"The rule changes... will entirely change how teams play - pushing their style toward that of other states such as New York, which moved to a one-yard rush line last year."
