"I think that the aggressive efforts Roger Goodell has undertaken seem to be paying off,"
"They're playing a longer-term game,"
"'leagues are organized within a country,'"
The season opens in São Paulo on September 5 when Kansas City and Los Angeles kick off, marking the first of seven NFL regular-season games abroad, the most demanding international slate to date. The league is pursuing global expansion to build long-term international fan bases rather than to seek immediate revenue. International momentum reflects decades of overseas activity: regular-season games have been played abroad since 2005 and preseason contests since 1950. Earlier experiments include the 1991 World League of American Football, which lasted two years. Other U.S. leagues have faced setbacks staging international series, including cancelled MLB plans for Paris, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Exporting professional sports can require longer timelines because 'leagues are organized within a country.'
