The best -- and worst -- rookie classes in the NFL: We ranked Year 1 impact for every team in 2025
"Based on game charting, total points takes every element of a play and uses that data to evaluate each player on a scale that allows us to compare between positions: How many points do we estimate that this player either earned for his offense or saved for his defense? Then I adjusted some teams up or down based on the importance of certain positions or how well players did in ESPN tracking metrics and the FTN Network DVOA ratings."
"The Saints' rookie class is headlined by second-round quarterback Tyler Shough, who ranked 21st with a 49.2 QBR in nine starts. That's not quite "the Saints are set for years" territory, but Shough has certainly earned the right to come back and try to improve as the starter. (Just remember that he's already 26 years old.) Shough's blind side was protected by first-round left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., who started all 17 games."
Rankings used Sports Info Solutions' total points metric based on game charting to estimate points earned for offense or points saved for defense. Adjustments accounted for position importance, ESPN tracking metrics, and FTN Network DVOA ratings, with postseason performance excluded. A sizable gap separated the top four rookie classes from the rest of the league, yet the top three teams still finished with losing records. The New Orleans Saints' rookies included second-round quarterback Tyler Shough (49.2 QBR in nine starts) and first-round left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. (17 starts; 75.6% run block win rate; 87.7% pass block win rate). The Saints' defense improved to 13th in defensive DVOA, and rookie Jonas Sanker earned recognition for communication and coverage ability.
