"It's not often in today's NFL that a star player spends his entire career, or even all of his best years, with one team. Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, and DeAndre Hopkins are only a few recent examples of wide receivers who were traded in the middle of their primes. Assuming McLaurin plays out his whole extension in Washington, he will have spent a full decade in D.C."
"By that point, his play will likely be on the decline, and he'll be thinking about how much longer he wants to continue competing in the NFL. As long as the Commanders are playing high-quality football, there's no reason he can't sign a series of cheap, short-term deals until he's ready to hang up his cleats. In the meantime, quarterback Jayden Daniels will be on his rookie contract throughout the entirety of McLaurin's new deal."
Terry McLaurin, a two-time Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro, signed a three-year, $96 million extension that includes a $30 million signing bonus. The deal keeps McLaurin with the Washington Commanders through most or all of his prime. Staying in D.C. through the extension could result in a decade-long tenure with the team and cement franchise-legend status. McLaurin may face declining production later in the decade but could extend his career with short-term, low-cost deals. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels will remain on a rookie contract during McLaurin's extension, creating a Super Bowl window. Continued 1,000-yard seasons could spark Hall of Fame consideration.
