Sources: Cowboys move on from DC Eberflus
"FRISCO, Texas - Matt Eberflus is no longer the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, sources told ESPN Insider Adam Schefter on Tuesday. Two days after the season ended with the Cowboys finishing last in the league in points per game and 30th in yards per game, Eberflus was relieved of his duties. As a result, the Cowboys will be looking for their fourth defensive coordinator in as many years after Dan Quinn (2023), Mike Zimmer (2024) and Eberflus (2025)."
"The Cowboys traded All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons the week before the season started and failed to secure a consistent pass rush. The Cowboys finished with 35 sacks, their fewest since 2020 when they had 31, which was the final 16-game regular season. Nine times opponents scored more than 30 points. The Cowboys allowed either a touchdown or field goal on 91 of 177 drives on the season."
Matt Eberflus was relieved of his duties as defensive coordinator after the Cowboys finished last in points per game and 30th in yards per game. The defense allowed 30.1 points per game and a team-record 511 points, marking the first time the franchise averaged more than 30 points allowed. The team traded All-Pro Micah Parsons before the season and produced just 35 sacks, the fewest since 2020. Opponents scored more than 30 points nine times, and the Cowboys allowed scores on 91 of 177 drives. The defense totaled 377 yards per game and only 12 takeaways, the fewest since 2015. Run defense improved but still ranked 23rd. The team will search for its fourth defensive coordinator in four years; Eberflus previously served as an assistant from 2011-17 and said he took ownership but would not have done anything differently.
