Shedeur Sanders is anticipated to start as quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in their preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. Selected in the fifth round of this year's draft, Sanders competes for the QB1 spot with Dillon Gabriel and veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. Due to injuries to Pickett and Gabriel, as well as Flacco's age, Sanders may have gained an opportunity for game action. The Browns will have joint practices with the Panthers prior to the game on Friday.
Sanders was selected in the fifth round of this year's draft and was the second quarterback the Browns picked behind Dillon Gabriel, who was taken in the third round.
Despite getting the fewest reps with the starters during training camp, hamstring injuries to Pickett and Gabriel may have opened the door for Sanders.
Flacco has received the most reps with the team's starters at training camp, and his age and experience could factor into the Browns' QB decision.
The Browns will begin joint practices with the Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday before competing in Friday's preseason game.
