San Jose State needs snap long Reno drought to keep bowl hopes alive
""It's not like we're Ohio State, we're struggling ourselves," San Jose State coach Ken Niumatalolo said. "We just need to focus on ourselves. They've been in a lot of close games and had opportunities to win, just like us.""
""It never felt in the game that the defense was stopping us," offensive coordinator Craig Stutzmann said. "We stopped ourselves.""
San Jose State needs three straight wins to become bowl eligible and will play at Nevada, where the Spartans have lost 10 consecutive games since 2000. The team is 3-6 overall and 2-3 in Mountain West play and has not won on the road this season. The offense faltered in a 26-16 home loss to Air Force, with three turnovers, a safety allowed and quarterback Jake Eget throwing two interceptions. The Spartans lead the FBS in passing yards per game (332.6) and Danny Scudero has 1,126 receiving yards, but Scudero was held to 41 yards against Air Force. San Jose State's defense ranks eighth in the Mountain West (419.56 yards per game) and limited Air Force below its scoring average. Nevada is 1-8 (0-5 MW) and has played several conference opponents closely.
