Saints' Moore defends not using 1st half timeouts
"We were really close to the banging a time out there and just stuck with the opportunity that we had,"
"'Hey, we'll start with the ball. We still have a little bit of time left to kind of see what happens and if we're able to gain some yards there, we can play the timeout game and we'd have plenty of time to get ourselves in a field goal position.'"
The New Orleans Saints lost 20-13 to the Arizona Cardinals after a late second-quarter series in which both teams still had all three timeouts. The Cardinals began a drive with 4:53 remaining, reached the Saints' 5-yard line by 1:57, and ran the clock to 28 seconds before James Conner's 4-yard touchdown made it 17-10. The Saints used no timeouts, ran one play (a 6-yard Alvin Kamara run) and let the clock expire to halftime. The coaching staff discussed calling timeouts but opted to retain them, planning to begin the third quarter with possession and attempt timeout strategies if the first play produced suitable field position.
