Rob Gronkowski: Patriots QB Drake Maye looked 'timid' against Raiders
"I think a lot of people out there bought into the hype,"
"Everyone thought the Patriots were gonna come out flying, were gonna play with urgency. And let me tell you, it wasn't there."
"Drake Maye had a pretty decent game, but it's not like he took that next step from his rookie year into his second year. And usually that's when NFL players make their biggest step in their career. It's from being a young buck, maturing and going into your second and third year. But we did not see that with Drake Maye. He still played pretty good, but he just looked a little timid out there"
The Patriots lost 20-13 to the Raiders in Week 1, with multiple units underperforming. Special teams faltered, including kicker Andy Borregales and punter Bryce Baringer. The defense surrendered nine plays of 20 or more yards to Raiders quarterback Geno Smith. Drake Maye started 14-of-20 for 150 yards and a touchdown, but threw an interception on the first third-quarter drive and the offense punted on the next four drives. Maye did not display an expected second-year leap and appeared tentative late. The Patriots prepare to face the Dolphins in Week 2.
