Prep talk: Verbum Dei gets first football victory since 2022 season
""When preparation meets opportunity, the outcome is sweet,""
""The kids were jumping up and down,""
""It was their first taste of victory in a long time.""
Verbum Dei resumed play after more than a month of practices and recorded a 42-8 victory over Belmont, marking the program's first win since the 2022 season. The school paused last season after an 0-7 start and a dwindling roster, then hired alumnus Gary Parks and delayed games while rebuilding on a freelance schedule. Freshman Dwight Marcus rushed six times for 75 yards and a touchdown. Adrian Alvarado had four solo tackles and a fumble recovery. Kicker Fernie Cortez converted five of six PATs. The team committed zero holding penalties. School president Father Travis Russell greeted the team with pizza and sodas. The next game is at Locke on Friday.
