Popular former NY Jets star and All-Pro NFL player dies at 41
Nick Mangold, a former New York Jets center, died at 41 from complications of kidney disease. He announced less than two weeks earlier that he had kidney disease and needed a transplant and that he was on dialysis while waiting. He said he had a genetic defect diagnosed in 2006 that led to chronic kidney disease and that no relatives were able to donate, prompting a public request for a type O donor. The Jets announced the death about an hour before a game against the Bengals. Mangold was a 2006 first-round pick from Ohio State, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, and helped lead New York within one win of the Super Bowl in both 2009 and 2010.
"His death comes less than two weeks after the two-time All-Pro selection announced on social media that he had kidney disease and needed a transplant. He said he didn't have any relatives who were able to donate, so he went public with the request for a donor with type O blood. "I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time," he wrote in a Oct. 14 message directed to the Jets and Ohio State communities."
""Nick was more than a legendary center," Jets owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. "He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick's wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.""
