Williams returned for training camp and the first week of the regular season, before leaving when diagnosed with prostate cancer. That once again thrust Kuhr into the play-calling role, and the defense ultimately became the backbone of the Patriots' run"
Terrell Williams is being moved to a high-ranking role on Mike Vrabel’s Patriots staff after missing the 2025 season because of a prostate cancer diagnosis. Williams has been cleared to return, but staff configuration still requires work. Inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr served as the defensive play-caller in Williams’ absence and is a leading candidate for the defensive coordinator job. Kuhr previously worked with Vrabel in Tennessee and served as de facto coordinator during organized team activities after Williams’ spring health scare. Williams returned for training camp and the first regular-season week before leaving again.
