Patriots rookies already sparking concern after brutal NFL Week 1 performance
"Fortunately, they had some competition in the joint practices with the Commanders and the Vikings before their exhibition games. First-round pick Will Campbell has started at left tackle from the beginning. His pass-blocking, the subject of all kinds of questions, was decent, but he allowed a fourth-quarter strip-sack. His run blocking, predicted to be terrific, wasn't. He also had two procedure penalties."
"Rookies in recent years, other than Drake Maye, who was foolishly precluded from any first-team reps for the entire 2024 preseason, and not until game four of the regular season, have not done much. Talking about the 2024 draft, except for Maye, none of the other players have proven they can play at all in the NFL, and several are already gone, with more to follow."
Eight rookies dressed for the New England Patriots in week one, with some not playing much or at all. Drake Maye received no first-team preseason reps in 2024 and did not play in the regular season until game four. The remainder of the 2024 draft class largely failed to prove NFL readiness, and several players have already departed. Mike Vrabel arrived in 2025 and initially improved the outlook. Five rookies played substantially against the Raiders; Marcus Bryant, Joshua Farmer, and Kyle Williams received incomplete grades. Will Campbell started at left tackle and earned a C after a fourth-quarter strip-sack, inconsistent run blocking, and procedure penalties. Jared Wilson started at left guard, provided decent pass protection, but did not stand out or boost the running game.
