Patriots' latest practice squad addition turns heads for all the right reasons
"Grant, 27, was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons at the beginning of the second round in 2021 from UCF. The Central Florida standout played five seasons with the Golden Knights and was one of the team's best players. While his coverage ability is notable, his strength lies in run support: he recorded a 90.0 PFF grade against the run during his final collegiate season."
"Grant initially looked sound in the NFL, recording 58.6 and 64.9 overall PFF grades in his first two seasons. Neither were elite, but the growth showed the Falcons they might have something. 2023 was a major step back, and in 2024, he was completely cut out of the defense after losing the starting job to veteran Justin Simmons. The Falcons started Grant only once, and he played 700 fewer defensive snaps than he did the season prior."
New England added Richie Grant, the 40th overall pick in 2021, to its practice squad without making a major trade. The practice squad already includes preseason standouts John Jiles and Miles Battle, productive defensive tackle Jeremiah Pharms, and three-time Super Bowl champion Darius Harris. Grant starred at UCF, played five seasons with the Golden Knights, and recorded a 90.0 PFF grade against the run in his final collegiate season. Early NFL grades were 58.6 and 64.9, but 2023 saw decline and 2024 featured a loss of his starting role and far fewer snaps. Grant was released by the 49ers in August. Patriots safeties show run support strength but have coverage concerns, with Kyle Dugger currently a backup and Dell Pettus listed as depth.
