Panthers outlast Bucs to take lead in NFC South
"Corbett thought he might have taken away that hope late in the first quarter when he stepped on Bryce Young's bothersome right ankle late, leaving the quarterback temporarily on the ground in pain. "Shoot, gosh dang-it, I owe you dinner, sorry a whole lot," Corbett said with a smile, trying not to give away exactly what he said with one of his young sons standing within earshot."
"Corbett was able to smile because Young bounced back with two touchdown passes and led the game-winning field goal drive that temporarily has Carolina in the driver's seat to win the division. Temporarily, because a loss next week to the Seahawks with a Tampa Bay win against the Dolphins would put the Bucs right back in control heading into the finale."
The Carolina Panthers beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 to move to 8-7 and claim a one-game lead in the NFC South with two games remaining. Coach Dave Canales described the locker room feeling as "Hope, belief" and said "Everything's right in front of us." A win next week against the Seattle Seahawks combined with a Buccaneers loss to the Miami Dolphins, or a Panthers win in the regular-season finale at Tampa, would clinch Carolina's first playoff appearance since 2017. Guard Austin Corbett called the victory "Everything" and apologized after briefly stepping on Bryce Young's right ankle; Young returned to throw two touchdown passes and lead the game-winning field-goal drive.
