"Wide receiver Hunter Renfrow hadn't given any thought to being cut after the Carolina Panthers wrapped up their preseason last week. The 2021 Pro Bowl selection was forced to on Tuesday when the Panthers released the 29-year-old, who was making a comeback from ulcerative colitis that forced him to miss the 2024 season after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders."
"Renfrow dropped from 185 pounds to 150 while being treated for the chronic digestive disease that causes inflammation and sores in the innermost lining of the large intestine. He was ready to give up football completely until Dabo Swinney, his coach at Clemson, convinced him to make a comeback. Renfrow, who grew up about four hours from Charlotte on the South Carolina coast and won two national championships at Clemson about 2½ hours away, decided then it would be the Panthers or bust."
The Panthers released wide receiver Hunter Renfrow after preseason as he attempted a comeback following ulcerative colitis that forced him to miss the 2024 season. Renfrow lost significant weight while undergoing treatment and at one point was ready to quit football until Clemson coach Dabo Swinney persuaded him to return. Renfrow felt he had let teammates down after signing a new contract and joining a new coaching staff, and he targeted Carolina as his comeback destination. Panthers coaches praised his route running and separation during camp, but the team kept seven receivers and prioritized younger players in the rebuild.
