"Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football,"
"Off the field, Nick's wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family."
Nick Mangold died suddenly at age 41 from complications of kidney disease, the New York Jets announced. He revealed two weeks earlier that he was undergoing dialysis and was seeking a kidney donor. He was diagnosed in 2006 with a genetic defect that led to chronic kidney disease and had been going through a "tough stretch" recently. Mangold was a seven-time NFL Pro Bowler who played his entire career with the Jets from 2006 to 2016 and was inducted into the team's Ring of Honor in 2022. He started 171 games, including seven playoff starts, after being drafted 29th overall from Ohio State.
