"Vera-Tucker is a very good player when he is on the field. The problem is he cannot stay on the field. He has been in the NFL for five seasons. He has suffered season-ending injuries in three of them."
"Sandwiched in between those three [injury] seasons was a standout 2024 at right guard. Still, this deal is a massive risk for the Patriots. If it works out, New England could get solid surplus value on this contract. If it does not, it could be a disaster."
The New England Patriots agreed to sign offensive guard Alijah Vera-Tucker from the Jets during the NFL's legal tampering period. Vera-Tucker, 26, signed a three-year deal worth up to $48 million. Though he was a first-round pick in 2021 and earned All-Rookie honors, his signing has drawn mixed reactions due to persistent injury concerns. Vera-Tucker has suffered season-ending injuries in three of his five NFL seasons, including multiple torn triceps and a torn Achilles. Despite a strong 2024 season at right guard, analysts view the contract as high-risk. If Vera-Tucker stays healthy, the Patriots could gain significant value; if injuries continue, the deal could prove disastrous.
