"The athletic department is not broken. We win."
"We're going to hire the best football coach there is,"
"We are not going to let this program fail. LSU has to be in the playoffs every year in football."
LSU fired coach Brian Kelly midseason, prompting a large buyout that private donors pledged to cover to prevent taxpayers from bearing the cost. Governor Jeff Landry publicly blamed athletic director Scott Woodward for the costly hire, and Woodward and LSU agreed to part ways. Interim athletic director Verge Ausberry said the athletic department is not broken and has been given full authority to run the department and lead the search for a new football coach. Ausberry vowed to hire the best coach and maintain LSU’s place in playoff contention. Woodward had served as AD since April 2019 and oversaw multiple national titles.
